Valentine's Day Party

These pictures from our Valentine's day dance party are SO cute! Thanks parents for the BEST PARTY ever!

Owl Calling

Thank you to all for such an exciting night learning about owls! We saw a screech owl, a few great horned owls, and I was dressed as an owl!  It was incredibly cute and heart warming to see how engaged the children were and hear all they had to share.  They sure did know a lot. Where in the world did Elijah and his brother learn all those facts? They were impressive with their extensive knowledge.  Henry's sister sure knew a lot too! Venturing out into the cold was not as bad as I thought it would be, I HATE the cold. It made me smile to watch the kids running around anxiously hoping to spot an owl! Unfortunately it was too cold but maybe you can spot one on your own this spring or summer. Sandy Willmore, who organized this event and turned my requests into reality has seen a great horned owl in our woods so don't give up! My hope is that the experience will be one to remember!

100 DAY FUN!

Celebrating the 100th day of school is always a major triumph! And...who doesn't like to plan a big party??? A banner welcomed the kids into the classroom to stir the excitement!

As they unpacked and approached the board to read their daily greeting they found 7 MYSTERY ENVELOPES!!! Children are curious in nature and when you gather 24 curious kiddos in one room...well they almost couldn't contain themselves.

The children each had a turn to  pick an envelope. It was a big decision for them to decide which to pick!

First up was 100 exercises!!!! Most of us enjoyed them, although there were a few groans!

Next we had......
Making words out of the letters that spell "one hundred"

The next envelope held....

"What will you look like when you are 100 and what will  you do?" This activity caused an obscene amount of laughter from us all!

This picture does not even do it justice. We used a free app called Age Booth which transformed our faces!!
Next up we had a 100's chart to color in by code....
The last envelope of the day ....
How many licks to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop? More than 100, les  than 100 or exactly 100?!!
First we made a graph with our guesses.
Next we set to work licking away and tallying our licks!

We ran out of time for the last two envelopes, but will complete them on another day!
Check out the 100's day shirts!

Process Over Product

We had such an adventure today with Mrs. Willmore as we planted our herb garden. First we trudged outside in the blizzard to gather buckets of soil!

Next, we dumped in the soil and packed it down REAL good!

After that, the children planted their herbs ever so carefully, and labeled each row. It was a beautiful sight!

The last step before moving the pallet to it's permanent location by the window- watering!
As the children admired their work, Mrs. Willmore, Miss Franz, and I tried to move this heavy pile of dirt packed into a pallet over to the window. FAIL!
The backing came unstapled, the dirt fell out, and the seeds scattered! One of the boys asked, "Why would you do that?????" So we had a discussion about scientists and inventors (and basic gardeners) that need to try and experiment over and over before they get it right. This is the PROCESS of learning- I couldn't have planned that better, right?!?!
Stay tuned as we try again.......
