Measuring Animals to Scale

Who says math and animals don't mix??
The first graders learned about inches and feet by measuring the real height of the African animals we were researching. The pictures are hard to tell but they labeled which animal they had measured and it's height in inches or feet. This was not a simple task. The kids had to learn how many inches are in a foot and use their math skills to convert feet into inches when measuring. They had to research the animal of interest to find it's height, which was typically stated in feet. Next they had to determine how many inches that was so they knew how many tape measures they needed to use. Then they had to double check their work and cut out a piece of string to that exact length. In the end we placed the strings side by side to compare animals.
